Abstract:
Dental implant maintenance is a critical component of long-term implant success. The accumulation of biofilm on implant surfaces can lead to peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, which are major causes of implant complications and failure. Effective maintenance programs focus on the prevention and control of biofilm through regular professional care, patient education, and individualized oral hygiene protocols. Advances in diagnostic methods, implant surface decontamination techniques, and supportive peri-implant therapy have enhanced clinicians' ability to preserve peri-implant health over time. This presentation reviews the role of biofilm management, risk assessment, professional maintenance strategies, and patient compliance in achieving predictable long-term outcomes for dental implants.
Objectives:
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Understand the relationship between biofilm accumulation and peri-implant diseases.
- Identify risk factors that influence implant health and long-term success.
- Describe evidence-based methods for biofilm control around dental implants.
- Develop individualized implant maintenance protocols based on patient risk profiles.
- Recognize the importance of supportive peri-implant therapy and regular follow-up care.
- Apply preventive and therapeutic strategies to minimize complications and enhance implant longevity.
- Educate patients on effective home-care measures to support long-term implant health and function.
