Abstract

Panoramic radiography is the most utilized radiographic examination in dentistry and at the same time is one of the most challenging imaging techniques to master. Production of a diagnostic panoramic image is challenging because it is technique sensitive imaging modality that requires understanding of the image production and inherent limitations. It requires harnessing patient cooperation. Most of unsatisfactory panoramic radiographic examinations can be avoided if the operator understood how the panoramic image is acquired and anticipated the common causes for image distortion to perform the necessary corrective action to deal with them.

By the end of the course, attendees should:

• List the appropriate application for panoramic radiography.
• Operate a panoramic radiography machine to performed a radiographic examination that results in a diagnostic image.
• Give appropriate instructions to patient to prepare him for the panoramic radiographic examination.
• Analyze non diagnostic panoramic radiographs and predict corrective actions to avoid the errors.
• Identify normal anatomical landmarks that appear on panoramic radiographs.
