Abstract:
Dental trauma is a common occurrence in children, often resulting from falls, sports injuries, or playground accidents. These incidents can range from minor enamel fractures to more severe luxation and avulsion injuries, requiring timely and appropriate intervention to ensure optimal outcomes. This session provides a comprehensive overview of the types of dental trauma frequently encountered in pediatric patients, emphasizing early diagnosis, effective management strategies, and the importance of follow-up care. Real-world case studies and clinical decision-making scenarios will guide participants through evidence-based approaches to care. Special attention will be given to communication with children and parents, as well as the emotional and psychological impact of dental trauma.
Course Objective :
By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
•Identify the most common types of traumatic dental injuries in pediatric patients and differentiate between injuries affecting primary and permanent teeth.
•Apply current evidence-based guidelines (e.g., IADT guidelines) in the management of various types of dental trauma.
•Demonstrate appropriate clinical techniques for acute trauma care, including repositioning, splinting, and managing soft tissue injuries.
•Interpret relevant diagnostic imaging to aid in the assessment and treatment planning of dental trauma cases.
•Recognize when to refer complex trauma cases to a pediatric dental specialist or multidisciplinary team.
•Evaluate the long-term implications of dental trauma and implement follow-up care protocols to monitor healing and prevent complications.
